Thanos Infinity Stones Saga

Thanos Marvel Villain

In another blog post I spoke about how Thanos' early life as well as his so called "destiny" to achieve the perfect balance across all existence by wiping out half of all life on every single planet in the galaxy. He sought out to achieve his goal by amassing all the resources at his disposal, traveling the galaxy planet by planet, and ending half of all the planet's life. Over time, he realized that the amount of existing lifeforms were far too many for him to individually "save". He found out that  by using the six Infinity Stones, objects that control all different aspects of life itself, he could solve the issue of imbalance permanently. These stones included the power, space, reality, soul, time and mind stones. In order to harness the power of all six stones, Thanos headed to the ancient forge of Nidavellir which was inhabited by dwarves who crafted magical and powerful weapons. He then proceeded to kill all the dwarves in the forge except for one whose name was Eitri. Thanos then commanded him to craft the Infinity Gauntlet(picture below) which strong enough to contain as well as utilize the power of the stones. Here we see Thanos becoming the Marvel Villain that has actually had an effect on many other movies without directly showing up in them. In the next section we will be looking at how exactly he did this.

Quest for the Stones

In the beginning, Thanos already had the Mind Stone. He then found out that the Space Stone(Tesseract) was  on Earth and decided to recruit the help of Loki in order to acquire it. He even gave Loki the Mind Stone to power his scepter and essentially gave up one stone in order to find the other stone.  In addition, he also provided him with an army of Chitauri soldiers(see below) which helped further motivate Loki to take up the mission. However, the Avengers were able to stop Loki in the Battle of New York when Iron Man successfully destroyed the command center of the Chitauri.  In the process, Thanos lost not one but two stones.

Two years later, Thanos discovered that the Power Stone was located in an orb on the planet Xandar. This planet had signed a peace treaty with Kree, very much to the dismay of Ronan the Accuser . Thanos then offered to destroy Xandar in return for the orb. However, when Ronan almost had the orb he was betrayed by Gamora , daughter of Thanos, who planned on taking the orb and selling it the Collector, a man known for gathering valuable objects throughout the universe.  Ronan then managed to track down Gamora and retrieve the orb. But, upon discovering the true power of the orb, Ronan decides to use the Power Stone and vows to come after Thanos after destroying Xandar himself. However, Ronan was defeated by the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Power Stone was kept by Xandar.

After Loki and Ronan both failed in obtaining the stones for Thanos, he then decides to take matters into his own hands. He begins this quest by decimating Xandar and acquiring the Power Stone. Shortly after, he ambushes a ship that contained the remainder of the Asgardians, leaded by Thor, Loki, Hulk, Valkyrie and Heimdall. He proceeds to knock out the Hulk with ease, kill Loki and Heimdall as well as acquire the Space Stone while leaving Thor for dead. His next stop was the planet Knowhere, where he easily collects the reality stone from the Collector.

The most shocking moment when watching Thanos is when we realize that he would stop at absolutely nothing in order to do what must be done and fulfill his destiny no matter the cost. We see this unwavering determination when he sacrifices Gamora, whom he cared for deeply, in order to acquire the Soul Stone. Next, Doctor Strange tells Thanos to spare Iron Man's life in exchange for the Time Stone. He then proceeds to obtain the Mind Stone easily by pulling it out of Vision's head and snaps his fingers, eliminating half of life.
